Located in Mon State and on the highest mountain of Paunglaung mountain rage, Golden Rock (Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda) is a must-see place in Myanmar. Both the Rock along with the Pagoda are the third important and sacred Buddhist site after Shwedagon Pagoda and the Mahamuni Pagoda.
The Rock lies on the edge of a cliff and it seems to fall down at any moment. People believe that a glimpse of the "gravity defying" Golden Rock is enough of an inspiration for any person to turn to Buddhism.
The legend said that Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda enshrined a Buddha's hair and it has been the place of worship for 2,600 years. At the peak of the pilgrimage season (normally November to March) and on the Full Moon day of Tabaung in March, a lot of people offer fruits, food, and incense to appreciate the Buddha at Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda. The place becomes mystical in the evening with lighting candles and small burning incense sticks.
All year round, best time to visit is in the dry season from October to April
